We expect at least a short paragraph per trait. Delete these sentences.
--- TIDY Alec cannot stand mess or untidiness. Unlike most teenager boys, his bedroom has always been pristine, everything neatly in its place and dusted as well. All his work is neat, filed and usually colour co-ordinated and he has been known to screw up pages if he’s not happy with the first few lines of handwriting. When visiting people, Alec has been known to start dusting their belongings and sorting through their laundry – clean, not dirty, he draws the limit there. --- PERFECTIONIST This trait clearly goes hand in hand with his neatness. He likes things to be done properly – also known as his way – and will stop other people and take over if they’re not doing it correctly. Nobody is allowed to do washing up when Alec is around, because he can’t bear to watch people doing it wrong, and he will wade in and take over. Writing essays takes forever because he goes over them constantly – Alec starts with plenty of time before a deadline, but finds himself working up to the last minute, second guessing himself. --- ROMANTIC Some girlfriends complain their boyfriends never remember birthdays or anniversaries – Alec has never forgotten one. Generous, loving, affectionate and not afraid to voice his feelings, a firm rule about not sharing details about his girlfriends and a sweet heart have made previous girlfriends very happy, but he has high expectations of them as he does the rest of his life. --- GOOD LISTENER Alec provides a dependable shoulder to cry on for his friends – he’s not one much for solid advice, but unlike some boys he never feels uncomfortable talking about people’s feelings, or when others get emotional. He’s always happy to listen quietly whilst nursing a beer, and to keep his friends company when they’re down. --- PROTECTIVE Alec was the ‘man of the house’ from a young age and therefore his attitude towards woman can be a little old fashioned – he’s not the sort to think they ought to be chained to the kitchen sink, but he’s certainly chivalrous. He’s always opening doors, carrying heavy items, offering up his seat on public transport and generally stepping to the aid of a damsel in distress where he sees it. He also loathes when he sees men treating women badly, and has been known to step in and tell men off who whistle in the street or even accost men he sees arguing in public with their partners.

Alec was born in Arlington to Anita and James Whitlock – the latter of whom died when Alec was twenty two months old. He has no memories of his father, but stories of the man filled his life. James Whitlock worked as a police officer. One night, he was called out to a situation – a father who had been banned access to his children and ex-wife after he was released from prison, where he’d served a sentence for beating up the poor girl, had shown up with a gun. There was a four hour standoff as they attempted to calm him down. Eventually, concerned for the children, they had made a move forward – and the man had shot three bullets out wildly. Two of them hit Alec’s father James. He had died three days later in hospital.
His father’s absence shaped his life. Alec was told about the man from a young age, photos of him were kept around the house, and his mother often mentioned James casually – in terms of, ‘your father would have loved that film’, ‘James adored sunny weather’ – and the man was often held up as an example to Alec, who has always strived to impress his mother, and his grandparents, by emulating his father.
He lived with his mother, and older sister Gabrielle – born twenty months before Alec – and it was impressed upon him that he was the man of the house. Therefore, his sense of humour and fun is less immediately apparent than in some because he felt the responsibility when he was young, but he is caring, more self sufficient then some boys in their late teens – he knows how to cook and clean impressively – and more of a gentleman. He and his mother are still close, and making her proud is still a huge concern in his life – he couldn’t treat a woman badly because she’d be ashamed.
As a child, unable to remember his father, the loss of him didn’t affect him badly. For a few years in his early teens, he was unhappy about the man’s absence, and later angry, but Alec has since come to terms with it, and focused on the family he does have. Even coming to Emerson – to study Linguistic and Media with a minor in Psychology – was planned to make his mother proud. She was so pleased when he got his college acceptance letter.
Do I need to do this when I've given a sample in my last application?
