It was an issue Julian found himself faced with often when it came down to crunch time for the school paper. Which article did he submit to the editor? A classic control freak, Julian always wrote multiple articles, anywhere from two to five, most of them he would consider nowhere near good enough to ever be read by anyone, but himself, and then he'd narrow it down to two or three and mull over them for days, ripping at his hair and stirring in his sleep over the papers. When it came to his writing, Julian was the textbook definition of a perfectionist.
He had asked the editor multiple times before if they would be willing to go over all his articles and choose which one they thought was best fit, but it wasn't as if she had time to sit around and critique his work. Nor did Julian expect her to. However, she always launched into some long lecture, using far too many poor adjectives, on why he needed to trust himself as a writer.
Julian wasn't able to get a hold of Cory, though he had tried, to meet up with him for coffee and read over all three possibilities over. Not that she would be able to make a decision, but she was one of the few people he let read his work before it went to print. So, now he had created a brand new device for decision-making: darts
He had taped all three papers onto the brightly coloured dart board that was hanging up straight across from him on the wall and back up to lean his butt against a pool tables edge, dart at the ready between his two callus licked fingers. Whichever one the dart's needle stabbed into would be the one he submitted. It wasn't the wisest method for choosing, but Julian was running low on time. Besides, it was inventive. The artistic students that were also taking up refuge from the autumn wind in the rec room were most impressed and amused.
The piece on the Chief Justice of the United States visit to the university? His interview with an underground girl's roller derby team entitled 'Bruises, Passion, and Pride? Or the paper that came to him mid-sleep where he compared the movie 'Marmaduke' to studying for your MCATS? Which one it would be? They were all incredibly ingenious to him, and yet, not quite good enough to stand out from the others.
