--- AWKWARD
Cole has always had the tendency to be incredibly awkward. He spends a lot of time fumbling over his words, processing them out in his head only to end up saying something completely opposite to what he intended to say. He's not sure if his awkwardness translates outward to other people but he sure does feel it on the inside. Like if he stands in a spot for two long and the people around him advert their eyes or stop pulling him into the conversation he automatically feels like he's overstepped his welcome and needs to go, but then when he steps away someone starts to talk and he turns around only to find that they're speaking to someone else. Yeah, he's that kind of awkward.
--- LOST
It's not that Cole isn't used to living in a busy city, it's more than he is disconnected from what he has known all his life. Naturally, as every college freshman should, he misses home. But the experience is something he's always wanted. Finally he lives on his own, even if it is in a dorm, and his parents can't make decisions for him (not that they could before). This, however, doesn't make him feel any less lost and displaced. He needs time to adjust. Not to mention that he absolutely misses Lacey and has bitten off quite a large amount of angst in reply to their break up. Sometimes he just needs to have someone grab him by the shoulders and shake that lost puppy look off his face.
--- UNINTERESTED
Never one to particularly follow any trends (not that he would have minded fitting in properly for all of ten seconds), Cole became indifferent to the activities of his peers ages ago. The amount of time that some of them spent going out and doing things was often mind boggling. Whatever happened to staying home and just hanging out? Of course, Cole was one of those kids who liked to spend a lot of time by himself. His parents were exceptionally thrilled when he announced that he would be attending school in a different state and living in the dorms, they insisted he would have opportunities for a social life but Cole just shrugged it off. He was indifferent to most of the things kids his age liked and wanted to do, as he'd much prefer sitting in front of his computer and doing something at least semi-productive (or otherwise entertaining). It often takes some convincing to get him off his rear and out into the world.
LIKES: Computers, quiet time, sleep, crayola crayons, big droopy eared dogs, striped socks, the older crowed, “Flavor of the Week”, onion rings, jelly beans.
DISLIKES: Melted ice cream, everything being black and white, plastic hangers without indents, tomatoes, extremely spicy food, system failure, when photoshop fucks itself, tablets that short out, cheesy gifts.
Margot Holland was a proper young lady from the heart of London, a proper young lady who at the age of eighteen met a proper young man called Peter Graham. He'd been visiting his grandmother as she lay ill, and originally hailed from Glasgow. It wasn't a terribly long distance to travel and after his visit with his gran ended his courtship of Margot began. He took the train, nearly every weekend (when he could afford to take the time to visit her) and held her hand tight in his while they ate lunch with her friends and walked along the streets, from shop to shop. They were an adorable couple and no one was shocked when he asked her to be his wife. They were shocked, however, that only months after the wedding the couple had decided to uproot and jump the pond. Whatever could force them to America? Especially Waterbury, Connecticut of all places?
It turned out that Peter's father had secured a job for him, and had left Scotland not long before Peter had to claim his own position as an executive over a factory that produced something or other, Cole had never really bothered to learn exactly what it was that the company his father and grandfather still worked for made. Margot was with child only a year after their move to America and their plan to have a family was underway. Cole was born, average size and average weight, in the fall. August was a lovely time of year, at least.
His youth was typical. His family had a house, two cars, a big dog with droopy ears that drooled a lot and a white picket fence. It was almost too good to be true. And of course, it was. By the time Cole was five years old the factory was moved to Albany, New York and the family "upgraded" to apartment living (not that their apartment wasn't akin to a house, and Cole would never remember living in the house in Connecticut). From an early age Cole picked up on a knack for sketching and a deep love of technology (starting with his infatuation of a Super Nintendo). So it was only logical that by the time he'd discovered computers that he'd combined all of his favorite things in one. Well, almost all of his favorite things.
Lacey was a beautiful girl, brunette and quiet. She liked musicals and smelled of apricots and in the summer time she hated wearing shoes. She was possibly Cole's most favorite thing, above all else. They'd met in grade school, but their friendship did not turn into a romance until they were freshmen in high school. The two of them spent all their time together, and Lacey is probably one of the only reasons that Cole was ever social (because she cared about events and friendships and, aside from her, Cole really didn't). Not many people had as serious a relationship as Cole and Lacey did at such a young age and not many people thought that the two of them would make a go of it the way they did. But even though they didn't have a whole lot in common (how they'd even met was still a mystery. Cole just assumed being in the same class was a good enough reason to approach her in the fourth grade) they lasted until the end of their senior year.
When Cole revealed that he had been accepted into Emerson College of Arts and Lacey distastefully turned her nose up at him, saying she was going to college in California and assumed he would follow her. Because he always followed her. They parted on bad terms, Lacey upset that he would do such a thing without telling her first and Cole angry that she believed he was only as good as a pull along toy. The summer was a lonely one but by the end of it Cole was ready to get to Philadelphia, even if his heart was still a little broken.
Why Emerson?
Emerson was the best school offering the subjects Cole wanted to master. It was also closer to home than all of his other choices, despite wanting to live away from his parents he figured it was rude to not keep a close enough distance to at least return home sometimes. It was an opportunity that he couldn‘t turn down and one that cost him his relationship.
